Disclaimer: Dry brushing may not be for everyone. If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, such as psoriasis, speak with your doctor first.
Dry brushing is one of those beauty treatments that needs no introduction. Mankind has known about the benefits of dry brushing for many millennia. And no matter how actively the cosmetology industry develops, dry brushing still remains one of the most beloved procedures by women all over the world. It’s easy to understand why – brushing doesn’t take much time, doesn’t require much financial commitment and has proven to be very efficient. Plus, you don’t need to do lots of research in order to be convinced of the benefits of dry brushing. Just a couple of weeks of regular self-massage sessions are enough to prove it’s effectiveness.
Dry brushing is best for exfoliating and is something I’ve been doing for years before taking a shower. It improves blood circulation, helps to increase lymphatic flow, eliminate toxins and byproducts of cellular metabolization, reduces the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks, and polishes the skin surface while making it soft and radiant. Rest assured, your skin will reward you with a healthy glow and less puffiness. Gentle exfoliation with natural bristles is designed to remove dead cells, improve blood circulation and stimulate lymph flow. In the long term, brushing improves skin elasticity and makes it smoother. No wonder so many celebrities like Elle Macpherson, Naomi Watts and Victoria Beckham call themselves fans of dry brushing.
Life hack: Morning massage with a dry brush accelerates blood and has a tonic effect, ideal for feeling invigorated even without a cup of coffee.
To enjoy all these benefits, it is enough to set aside just five minutes a few times a week for the procedure. Make sure to purchase a good brush with natural bristles. I’ve linked the ones worthy of your attention below. Brushes can be made of synthetic materials (which tend to feel harsher on the skin), boar bristles, cactus bristles, vegetable fiber or other natural materials. Some have long handles for hard-to-reach areas while others are small and fit right in your palm.
HOW TO DRY BRUSH:
Place the brush directly on dry skin, applying gentle pressure. Gently brush upwards in a sweeping motion toward the heart, starting all the way at your ankles and wrists, moving inward from there. When all areas of the skin are exfoliated, rinse off as you would normally. And don’t forget to wash your brush with shampoo at least twice a month to get rid of all of that dead skin buildup.

In the shower I like to follow up with a coffee scrub and then apply an anti-cellulite cream to my thigh area. Coffee scrubs thoroughly remove dead cells, initiate the processes of regeneration and cellular renewal of the epidermis and make skin surface become even smoother. They help to eliminate the “orange peel”, removes excess fluid, improves skin firmness and elasticity, and has an anti-cellulite effect thanks to the action of the caffeine. I’ve also linked some for you here, but you can easily make your own scrub at home by using coffee grains and mixing it with coconut or olive oil and brown sugar. I like to add a drop of liquid vitamin E to it for an extra antioxidant effect. If I have some extra made and want to preserve it, I just put it in a small jar and keep it in the refrigerator.

In the end, for optimal results, I apply a cellulite cream to my thighs. And although there aren’t many skincare ingredients that actually treat cellulite, there are many products you can use to create a tighter, firmer look. Most of them contain caffeine, which creates a tightening effect by dehydrating the skin, essential oils and red algae. When you apply your cellulite cream, be sure to massage it in to increase blood circulation and reduce excessive amounts of fluid in areas that contain cellulite.

If you enjoy your self-care routine then, by all means, that’s enough of a reason to try dry brushing. Just be mindful that it’s not a system that will solve all of your problems, but it will definitely give you smoother looking skin thanks to the exfoliation. Enjoy!
